Customer Problem

Just like any other culture, Germans sometimes encounter the need to purchase high-value items but may not have the immediate funds to make a lump sum payment. How can we enhance the purchasing ability of a culture that prefers alternatives to revolving credit lines, such as credit cards?

Competitor Analysis

To gain insight into the market's needs, I combined research conducted on our competitors (Affirm, Klarna, Afterpay, etc.) with a thorough analysis of their existing user flows.

User testing

Working alongside our research partner and the globalization team, we translated and tested various workflows to thoroughly comprehend which approach best resonated with our German audience. Our user experience research (UXR) indicated that our users were highly satisfied with the streamlined application process. They encountered no difficulties in understanding each plan, selecting the one that suited their needs best, and successfully completing the transaction.

I expanded installment options from one to four and integrated plan selection into checkout for upfront clarity. Partnering with legal, product, and content, I cut the application from four pages to one, rebuilt all edge-case flows (validation, declines, manual/late payments, refunds), and upgraded the UI to PayPal 3.0 across mWeb, app, and desktop.
